How to create the perfect pitch

So, you’re ready to create a pitch video about your brilliant and unique business idea to the Wessex Dragons. Before you do, read through our top tips to ensure you create a compelling, engaging and above all, convincing video pitch that will inspire valuable partners to invest their time and money in you and your business.

Plan & practice your pitch

A video pitch is a performance. A different kind than one you’ll find on the stage but a performance nevertheless. You therefore need to make sure you carefully plan out every part of your performance and practice, practice, practice. Perform it in front of family and friends who don’t know anything (or very little) about your business to check you’re being both clear and engaging.

Keep it short – no more than 5 minutes

Though it may seem like 5 minutes is a long time to talk, once you get going, you’ll realise you have a lot to say. If you find you are going over your time limit, you’ve probably included some information you don’t need right now so revise your plan and cut it down to your most important points.

Don’t talk about yourself

At this stage of the process you’re trying to hook the Dragons with your idea, not with your lovely personality. Dive straight in with what your product is and how it solves a particular problem. Consider opening your video with an image of your product and a short benefit statement – but make sure it’s attention grabbing.

Be clear about what you’re offering and its USP

Briefly describe the problem faced by your target market and then spend time explaining what your product or service is and how it solves that problem to a satisfying conclusion. Highlight its unique selling point and why the Dragons should care. Remember, you’re trying to convince someone to invest their time and hard-earned cash in you and your idea, so you need solid reasoning, examples and evidence of success.

Tell a compelling story

There’s a reason storytelling has been around since humans developed language and that’s because stories are compelling. Emotion is possibly the most influential factor when making any decision, whether it’s a personal one or a business one. Use the ancient art form of storytelling to inspire an emotional connection in your Dragon with you and your idea.

Think carefully about where to stage your video

A carefully considered backdrop of your video will help explain and enhance your idea. For example, if your product is for a fantastic new saucepan, film your pitch in a kitchen. If you’ve invented a self-making bed, stage your video in a bedroom. Wherever you film your pitch, ensure you have good lighting and a quiet environment, so you have clear visuals and audio.

Now you know how to make the perfect pitch, what are you waiting for?
